technology dissemination fellowship program

The Technology Dissemination Fellowship program allows for targeted dissemination and transfer of appropriate technologies developed at MIT in recent years along with suitable open-source technologies. Each semester Technology Dissemination fellows receive training and support from MIT staff in making and disseminating particular technologies, and communicate with their community partners to plan field work. In many cases TDFs work in teams of two or more students. While in the field, either during the summer or over IAP, the team focuses on transferring and disseminating the technologies through a close collaboration with their community partners.

slidedeck of current technologies

Click here for a downloadable .pdf presentation of some of the technologies with which we are currently working. As the program grows, we expect to add more technologies to this group. Students who have developed or are very familiar with other appropriate technologies may propose incorporating these technologies into their projects.

Timeline

The timeline is designed to allow students the opportunity to begin their fellowship while still on campus during the semester. Students should plan to work a minimum of 3-5 hours per week preparing for their work with the community partner.

FAQs

  • Are graduate students eligible to apply?
    Yes.
  • Do I need to know who my team members are before I apply?
Teams will be identified in one of two ways. You can apply with a teammate in mind, although you each need to send in a separate application. If you don’t already have a team in mind, you can apply as an individual and we will pair you with team members who have complementary skills.
  • Do applicants need former experience with the technologies prior to disseminating them? We envision teams of MIT students working on the interests of the community partner.
Ideally, each team will comprise of student who have some familiarity with the technology (which will happen over the course of the spring semester) and a student who is interested in business models.
  • Are you looking for students who have a technology already developed and would partner with those organizations listed to disseminate them, or for students to help to disseminate products that those companies already have developed to some extent?
For this pilot year we are starting with the technologies in the slide deck, however we remain open to addressing the community partners needs in the future, and as the fellowship evolves over the course of conversations with the community partner.
